A home is traditionally a place of shelter and comfort but due to the covid 19 pandemic, this familiarity became a source of grievance and disappointment. During this time, home manifested into an overtly familiar environment. No longer does one return home from the outside world, greeted by familiarity, instead the domestic space became our de facto environment during the various guises of lockdown. My domestic environment became unfamiliar territory; the distant landscape (my natural subject) was seemingly out of reach or at least hampered by the message ‘stay at home’.
The main objective of these images was to use technical and methodological practices that I once employed in the outer landscape but utilize them within the domestic space. The analog medium played a crucial role in slowing the shooting process; each photographic exposure became a considered and careful decision due to the limited amount of frames available on each roll of film.
I photographed subtle nuances that I found at home as I observed the banality and ambiguousness of existence to develop this series. Once intricate compositions of woodland foliage now mimicked minor observations within a household setting. Home during Covid-19 saw an increase in our presence; there are more scuffs on the furniture and chips in the wallpaper. The colours and décor receded as a passive backdrop brought on by our increased presence; changing natural light patterns and shadows the only visual clues to the passing of time. This light also revealed the myriad of ‘minor imperfections’ created by continuous human presence. If it were not for the interruption of the camera many of these scenes would go unnoticed. During the pandemic my home environment became my new landscape; a landscape that is safe yet frustratingly familiar and I found myself willingly occupied with the task of capturing this familiarity.
